I am drawn to the story of creators among us, it is an intimate privilege to observe artists who are actively creating. The work of the Portland String Quartet represents concentration, diligence, collaboration and a battle for expression, all wrapped in elegant movements played out on timeworn instruments. I created the quartet series as a study of the individual within a group. They practice with intensity and love: love for the composers who scored the music, love for the community of musicians with whom each plays and love for the intricacies of their physical connection to the instrument. They sit in a centuries-old church built by faith-loving people, playing an instrument made by artisans who also pursued the mastery of their craft. Perhaps most importantly, they play for an audience seeking beauty and peace in their lives. In these portraits, I seek to bear witness to humanity's search for excellence.
